My journal entry from that day is below. There weren't many words to describe what I was seeing so I used photos found online in the days that followed. I was 21 years old and in my 4th year at NIU.

A few weeks later on September 29th, the NIU Huskie Marching Band joined the University of Toledo Marching band at their stadium for a combined performance of "God Bless the USA" and "Stars and Stripes Forever". I still tear up when I remember the feeling of playing that piccolo soli. I barely got through it that day.

I saw Sherry post this to her site and then Emily (HGTV Design Star winner and Secrets from a Stylist host) mentioned it on Twitter. Both are ladies whose style and craftiness I admire. I thought it was a brilliant idea. I just had to decided which of my pins to take on. I ended up making sewing kit in a jar because I had just bought a bunch of little spools of thread and need a place to keep them besides a sandwich baggie!

the inspiration

I purchased a small mason jar at Michael's for only $1.40! Then I located a tutorial via Martha Stewart since the original post that was linked only had photos. I didn't take pics of the process so check out the link to Martha for instructions. Other supplies that I already had on hand included:

fabric
batting
hot glue gun

My finished result is pretty and awesome! Music themed since it will be in the office with all our music books and instruments.

I also updated another Pinterest project I had done a month or so ago.

the inspiration

I bought some drawer liner for my nightstand and had some scrap pieces so I decided to spruce up the bottom part of my dishwasher status wheel. Before it was just scribbles of black marker. It looks so pretty now!

The bottom part is just another CD cut in half and then I'm lazy so its just taped to the little hook.

I'm really happy with these projects. The shopping started off really frustrating because I couldn't find the supplies I wanted for the pins I chose initially. Next projects will most likely be a clothespin sunburst mirror and a match holder from a mason jar.

Aubrey has rediscovered his love for sailing within the last year. I'm glad he has something physical to do. I generally don't worry about him when he's out on Lake Michigan. The harsh environment of Lake Michigan turned scary for him last night during some severe weather that hit overnight.

I went to bed around 10:30pm knowing it was likely he would get caught in but didn't let myself worry about it. I was woken up at 3am by a text from Aubrey that said "safe through the storms everyone's fine. Finishing soon." I went back to sleep.

Aubrey called me at 7:45am after they had finished and eaten breakfast. This is when he told me that those storms were the scariest he's ever found himself in. Another member of his crew was 70% sure the boat was not going to hold up. Aubrey said they had to stop sailing the race and basically just hold on to make it through. Now I was concerned. I had no idea it had been that bad.

I had no idea until I hung up with Aubrey that it could have been so very much worse.

Statement from Chicago Yacht Club

As of Monday, July 18, it has been confirmed by the U. S. Coast Guard and it is with great regret that the Chicago Yacht Club acknowledges the deaths of two sailors who were competing in the 2011 Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac.

A severe thunderstorm crossed Lake Michigan around midnight EDT last night. Windgusts were reported at 52 knots with waves of 4-6 feet.

The Coast Guard was notified at 12:40 am via VHF radio by crew members from one of the competing boats "Sociable" that another of the competing boats, "WingNuts," had capsized in these severe conditions. Five sailors were pulled from the water on arrival to the scene and one other sailor was later rescued. The six sailors were rescued by the crew of "Sociable."

The accident occurred approximately 13 nautical miles northwest of Charlevoix, Michigan, and 10 miles east of South Fox Island.

The "Sociable" skipper called all boats for assistance on Channel 16 and ten boats in the vicinity immediately abandoned the race to join in search efforts for two missing sailors.

The two lost sailors were "WingNuts" skipper Mark Morley, 51, and Suzanne Bickel, 41, both from Saginaw, MI.

Mark Morley had 44 years of sailing experience, including six Chicago Mackinacs and 85 qualifying races. Suzanne Bickel had sailed in two previous Chicago-Mackinac Races, with 16 qualifying races.

In a brief statement Commodore Joseph S. Haas said, "On the behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, the Board of Directors and Flag Officers, we express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the crew of "WingNuts." The crew of this boat exemplified the spirit of the Chicago Mac that is steeped in tradition of family, friends and passion for the water."

My husband could have died last night.

That is all I will let myself think about that. I mean, it could happen it anytime, but during a long distance race on a known to be harsh water environment sort of amplifies that. I know that he is safe and will be coming home to me soon. I can't wait to give him a big hug on Wednesday.

I feel very satisfied that I was able to complete the 365 project. I've taken some time away from my cameras, mostly because I've been distracted by my new electronic love, my Nook Color. In two weeks I've already read 2 books, 1 magazine and several essays! A little down on my side bar I've added a Good Reads widget so you can see what I've read (as long as I remember to update it!).

Hopefully soon I will get back to my camera and post some shots but it won't be an ongoing project like last time, just the ones I really like. I also hope to start playing my flute a little more this year since I won't be focusing on the photography so much.

Taking this pictures made me feel really nervous, from the height plus holding my camera over the railing. I get really anxious around heights and I took this picture from the 5th floor looking all the way down to the basement. It doesn't convey the height as much but I was really drawn to the repeating pattern.
